Cerro Gordo Illinois News & Information!Welcome to Cerro Gordo Illinois - a Central Illinois Community.Conveniently located between Decatur (14 miles) and Champaign (40 miles), Cerro Gordo Illinois is a small, quiet community steeped in old fashioned tradition and values. Established in 1844 as "Griswold", veterans of the Mexican-American War renamed the town to "Cerro Gordo" after the "Battle of Cerro Gordo" in 1947. Cerro Gordo literally translates from Spanish meaning "Fat Hill". Today, Cerro Gordo, Illinois is a thriving community - about 1500 people and growing! Cerro Gordo boasts a fantastic school system, several downtown merchants, public library, a bank, a gas station/service center, grocery store, and much, much more! But the heart of Cerro Gordo lies in the community members who give it life. Our teachers, our business leaders, our children - everyone contributes in their own way to the growth of the community.
